Members Salon with Philip Steenkamp, President & Vice-Chancellor, Royal Roads University
What Future for Higher Education? - Philip Steenkamp, President and Vice-Chancellor of Royal Roads University.
Philip Steenkamp has worked as a deputy minister in both the Ontario and BC governments, served as vice-president of both UBC and SFU, and was the chief executive officer of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics secretariat.
As President and Vice-Chancellor of Royal Roads University, Dr. Steenkamp is ideally situated to comment on the challenges facing higher education as it prepares students for the harsh realities of the 21st century.
What future for higher education - when environmental crises, artificial intelligence, dwindling government funding and rising tuition rates combine with new pressures on academic freedom, declining public trust in science and an increased demand for professional training at the expense of learning for learning’s sake?
Dr. Steenkamp’s work at Royal Roads University will be of particular interest to Salt Spring Forum members because of its focus on continuing education, including cutting-edge models of distance learning. Don’t miss this important discussion on the future of higher education!
