Our creativity is our most powerful resource. From being innovative in the workplace to playing wildly with our children, we rely on our gift of imagination to make our life dynamic and rich. This mini walkabout provides exploration -- whether striving to become an artist or simply wanting to incorporate more creativity into everyday life. Through experimental photography, we can learn to reconnect with the essence of who we truly are.

---

This workshop is primarily suited for photographers of all skill levels, including beginners, who want to learn how to take better photos -- in a fun-filled weekend.

Shutter speeds, ISO, apertures, and shooting modes -- where do you even begin?

Right here, right now at this 2-day beginner + intermediate level workshop of discovery. Learning comes from questions. Questions come from not knowing.

This is a unique opportunity to take part in a combination indoor-outdoor photography workshop with a National Geographic photo expert who has seen it all. Pete Ryan has held well over 700 photo seminars that are easy-to-understand instruction in a relaxed and inspirational environment such as downtown Victoria.

While you don't have to be a professional to make good photographs, you do have to spend a lot of time experimenting with your camera. We'll explore and explain the elements of composition, lighting, and exposure that go into the thinking part of image making, and the cameras, lenses, and other hardware that are our tools. Some of the topics covered in the Saturday program include:

  • Understanding of camera and lenses functionality, ISO, shooting modes, apertures, shutter speeds.
  • Tips and techniques on cameras and gadgets and how to utilize accessories: remotes, filters, tripods.
  • Get the exposure you want, not what the camera tells you.
  • How to outsmart the camera, every time.
  • How to edit a scene and create a solid composition.
  • How to move from taking pictures of what people and places look like to creating photographs that touch hearts and minds.
  • How to engage with a subject that ignites your passion and document it in a unique and compelling way.
  • Learn to realize and express poetic visions that touch your heart.
  • Expand your willingness to take risks and deepen your ability to truly see what it is you want the picture to say. Your creativity is inside, waiting to take form and find expression. Take this fun and rewarding workshop and be amazed at the creative power that's already inside you, waiting to be unleashed.

For the Sunday program, we'll take to the outdoors and apply the skills, perfect for shaking things up and trying something new. We'll visit a number of Pete's favourite places in and around town.

There will be plenty of one-on-one instruction with time for positive and encouraging conversation. Once you've caught hold of the basic skills for creating images, there is no limit to what you can do next with your photography! There is no substitute for making lots of pictures, and few other things are as much fun. So where should you start and what should you do? The fact that you're reading this right now is your key to making the photos you've always hoped for. So congratulations. It's time to register.
