Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves, home to native wildlife like sea lions, koalas and diverse bird species. The Fires on the island, have so far burned through 155,000 hectares – about one third of the island. Donations will cover veterinary costs, koala milk and supplements, extra holding/rehabilitation enclosures, as well as setting up a building to hold supplies to treat these animals.
St. Vincent de Paul Society, otherwise known as “vinnies” in australia is helping with the bushfire tragedy by Providing the following:
- Food, clothing, essential items and grocery vouchers for people who have lost everything
- Pay unexpected bills as people work through the recovery process
- Make referrals onto a range of other organisations providing crisis accommodation and specialised services
- Give much-needed emotional support, as well as practical assistance to pick up the pieces after homes are lost
