On social media and in our newsfeeds and mailboxes, heart-rending images of needy or suffering children confront us on a daily basis. They seek to grab our attention, prick our moral conscience, stimulate empathy and political action, or open our wallets for a good cause. This talk considers the history of humanitarianism through the camera lens and its focus on the child. History suggests that while depictions of children-in-need may appear static and predictable, they have been deployed in various ways for a surprising array of political agendas for more than a century.

Is the curling rink inside that huge Atco arena complex? Also can we rent shoes/brooms to play ?

Hi Sarah - I'm not sure if the building is sponsored by Atco. If you follow Whoop-Up Drive west and drive till you pass Boston Pizza and No Frills, it's just west of the Boston Pizza. We can wear street shoes as long as they are clean. They have brooms and sliders for us to use at the curling rink!
