Background:

Nowadays, the shortage of qualified interpreters in courts has created an impending need of Certified Court Interpreters. For the past decade, complaints have been made to this regard, but the problem remains. Approximately, 150,000 hours of interpretation services are required every year, yet there are not enough full-time interpreters or freelancers, whose level of competency varies widely. The Ministry of the Attorney-General recognizes the need to continue to make improvements as the demand for court interpretation evolves and grows. Testing programs have been strengthened and pay rates increased to secure a more stable complement of interpreters.

This workshop is a great opportunity to touch basis with this promising profession.

Who should attend?

This workshop intents to serve as an introductory guidance for those candidates, translators, interpreters in other fields and professionals in related matters interested in pursuing this career as a new venue to get off a head start.

What can attendees expect during the workshop?

Attendees will be introduced to the actual practice of court interpretation throughout a presentation that will explain the history of this profession as well as the legal system court interpreters work in. Different communication situations and practical solutions will be presented that can be used in the daily practise.

A Certified Court Interpreter will also participate in person imparting his own experience in legal matters.

Finally, an interview with a prosecutor will be recorded in order to know the expectations that professionals working with court interpreters have regarding their performance.

A question period will be allowed at the end of each part of this workshop.

What can attendees expect to take away from the workshop?

Attendees can acquire more knowledge about court interpreting as well as new techniques of work.

A summarized handout and resource material will be available for those attending the workshop.
